I Am Legend

Holy Shit, I just saw the preview. Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend, the novel that inspired George Romero to create Night of the Living Dead is finally being made into a major motion picture.  With Will Smith, no less. I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am.

 This has so much potential.

A letter to EA-Mythic

Jeremy,

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but I felt pretty strongly that I should say my peace. As a subscriber to Ultima Online for coming on ten years now, I have a good amount of emotional investment in the franchise. Between Third Dawn, UO:R, and Ninjas.. Well let’s just say I’ve felt gypped by EA more then once.  The announcement of today of Kingdom Reborn going live, even though there are a large number of crippling bugs still in existence concerns me a great deal. I had been a herald for Kingdom Reborn, tooting the proverbial horn from the moment I heard about it.

I honestly believed that EA was going to finally provide us with a next gen engine that was bug free, and had the benefit of a long development process in which as many bugs as possible were addressed. Now, I realize you guys are dealing with years and years of code, and revisions upon revisions to that code. I understand the huge project that this facelift is. However, I cannot help but feel that EA has shoved this title out the door much like Pagan, and Ascension.

Please, tell me this isn’t so, tell me I’m just over reacting and everything is fine.

Dynamic player created content. Blessing.. or CURSE?!

I had a long discussion with one of the more vocal PRC users last night, and it brought up a long running annoyance of mine. In the last few (six at least) years the communities in Ultima Online have become so lethargic its almost laughable. Take Pacific for example, sure there are pockets of player who are dedicated, but active and motivated? Well thats another thing.

Maybe my standard is just a bit higher, but I know from first hand experience how much of a boon actively updated news can be. I’m not just talking a brief post, or even a long drawn out in character one. Real news, like the front page of a news paper. Pictures, commentary – bring the readers of the site into what is happening. Christ, it just seems like everyone would like to have an active and robust community, but no one is willing to do the work.

Only give their own little sideline commentaries on what *I* am doing wrong.

Die MediaWiki, Die.

So I’m still treading water on this PRC MediaWiki install. God knows I have these grand dreams and visions for it, but I can never seem to find the time to roll everything out. Why can’t MediaWiki come with all the infoboxes, templates and such preinstalled? >< I really need to sit down and get this thing done. I’m convinced the community will be a lot better off with it. If nothing else, it should generate more traffic.

I mean, how cool would this be? A virtual tome of information, guilds, characters, events. You name it, it could all be covered in this wiki. All I really need is contributors, and in the end getting the community to be active in anything is the hardest thing.
